The leasing of CB&Q power to other railroads (and vice-versa) was fairly common.

An interesting early (1860) instance was the leasing of a group of 4-4-0s to the Grand Trunk.  One of the locomotives is recorded in the memoirs of Thomas Edison when he took the throttle and was too heavy handed with the injector causing mud to come out of the stack and cover the locomotive and train.   The leased engines were later sold to the GT.
