Tony Thompson gave a clinic on Wine cars and traffic at the Chicagoland RPM this weekend. You may wish to contact him, as he has a collection of photographs on
wine cars and is knowledgeable on wire traffic. His handout is available at
www.modelingthesp.blogspot.com. Search the handouts link on this site for ‘wine tank cars’.

Subject: [CBQ] Bulk Wine on the CB&Q
I ran across an interesting interchange car from the NP to the Q. A Chateau Martin wine car converted from a General American-Pfaudler milk car! These colorful cars were well photographed but I never had heard of them until I started my research. Eastbound
NP train 600 had CMWX 1009 on it for interchange to the Q in St. Paul. You can find out all about these cars at:
http://coastdaylight.com/chatmart/cmwx_roster_1.html
What is interesting is that there are a couple of other photos on the above website of these cars in the Pacific Northwest (in this case, the older wooden cars). Since the cars carried wine from California to the Bronx in New York City, the routing was probably
California north to the NP to CB&Q/St Paul to NYC/Chicago to New York City. My guess is this may have avoided the wine going across the desert in the summer. But I can't confirm that.
I was wondering if anyone has or knows of any photos of these cars in Q trains between St Paul and Chicago? Or perhaps Q wheel reports, etc. that mention CMWX cars? I think this was normal routing, over the NP and Q, but it would be nice if there was some
further evidence from Q sources.
