My Mom worked at the shop here in Burlington from 1946 to 1955 and she talk about the old employees that work on the steam work just starting and razing the diesel guys every time steam had to help a diesel up the hill

Pat - I'd like to see that post. It appeared well before I joined the Group.

I think Lines East and West Helper Districts would be a good subject to cover in the BRHS Bulletin or Zephyr.  The only steam helper images I've ever seen are with the helper on the head end. I wonder if this was standard Q practice, or if steam "pushers" could be found on some districts?

I'm inserting and attaching an image of Class O-3 No. 5304 on the head end helping an unidentified Class O-5-A approaching West Burlington Hill in 1949:

Going back to Lines West, one of the routes out of Lincoln required a helper up out of the yard and Class B 4-8-2 types were used into the early 1950s. I vaguely recall this was the last use of 4-8-2's system wide. Perhaps, Pete will remember which route this was. Best Regards - Louis

Great photo, but I was referring to a multipage description of the actions taken by the engine crews.  It included two or more locomotives coupled together; and lead engine and rear pusher.  If Pete is still with us, maybe he can re-post.  Sorry I did not get his complete name.  If not, and if the group has no objections, I can try to get in on the list as an attachment.

Hi Pat,

Not sure if this was the one, but there is a somewhat well snowy 1953 Richard Steinheimer shot of an eastbound about to top the hill at Parkman, WY. His notes mention the 4-8-2 helper #7002 was added at Wyola, MT.

In October 2009, an excellent piece on double-heading steam locomotives was posted to this site by someone named Pete.  I copied  it and saved it to my files.  If there is a past file kept at the web site, maybe it can be re-posted.
