Rupert,

Those tanks were the property of a fuel oil distribution company and were not related to the Q’s operation. There were two fuel oil companies adjacent to each other at that location. I believe that the tanks in the photo belonged to the Standard Oil Co. The other company was Cities Service Co. and was located just to the west. The Cities Service tanks were oriented so that the round ends were north and south and also appear in some photos taken in the vicinity. Both fuel oil distributors were accessed from Warren Avenue that parallels the Q in that area. Just to the east of the two fuel companies was a house that at one time belonged to a RR employee. To the south of it was a roundhouse that survived into the early 1930’s but was too small for the pacifics and removed. Just east of the roundhouse area was the turntable, a water column or plug. South of the plug, adjacent to the sidewalk along Warren Avenue was the Q’s water tower which was a fairly large wood structure. The turntable survived to the mid to late 1950’s and the tower was removed shortly after the end of steam in September, 1952. I grew up a couple of blocks west and north of this point from 1946 to 1966.

There's a photo of #2852 on eBay, taken at Downers Grove in June 1950

On the right hand side of the photo are two concrete tanks on concrete
supports. Any idea what they were used for?
