RE: [CBQ] E8 Nose stripping change from Black to Red

Red nose stripes appeared in late 1959 and afterwards. E9s were first delivered on to the Q in December 1955, so they would have had black nose stripes. The only exterior difference I know of between E8 and E9s was that the E9 nose light lens was flush mounted while the E8 lens was recessed with a  gasket on top of the lens. I don’t know any models that differentiate that minor detail.

I know this has been asked before, but I can not find the answer.

 

What year did the Q start re-painting the nose strips on E8's from black to red? Did E9's ever carry black nose strips? 

 

While on the subject. Other than the road numbers, are there any specific exterior details that distinguish the difference between the 8's and 9's?
