Tom Hammer...I "revel" in your post..What great memories you shared with us...I'm of the same "vintage" as you...just a bit older  (1936 model) and never actually lived in any city, but had enough opportunities to visit and ride streetcars in "The City" that I can put myself right in the seat with you riding "downtown" on the streetcar.  The sights, sounds AND SMELLS of your post resounded deeply in my memory...

Sure wish I could be there for Leo's program, but a 1000 + mile round trip is a bit much for me now...So I'll have to live "vicariously" though what you guys write here..Keep up the good work.

Pete

As a kid we would ride the street car to Chicago to visit relatives and shop at Goldblats.
There was an alcove so the Street Car could put maybe 2 cars in to Board and de-board passengers off the street,
where the Stone Ave sign is.
I think you can see just a part of the Switch behind the car in one photo. This was the end of the track.
The street car took 25 minutes to get down town. The buss took an hour of hot sweaty miserable ride.
We started using the Q after the bus. Thanks much for the pictures the more the better.

I don't remember any freight but the REA on the South West corner of Brainard & The tracks.
There were several tracks with a passing track.  A single long siding to Leach ave.
I actually received REA packages there. They ran REA delivery trucks from there.
It was a super place for kids to play. The RR dicks got tired of taking our names.
I was born in 1941 lived at 234 S. Peck Ave.  4-4-0 steam rides to Chicago.
I would open the window and stick my head out so I could see the Locomotive round the
turn into Union Station. The passengers would go nuts with the smoke and cinders coming in.

I'm putting the finishing touches to the LaGrange presentation for this Thurs the second of March. Need help again.
I know I've seen photos of the Stone Ave freight houses but cannot find them in any of my sources. There were two. One on the North side just east of the station platform and the
Other on the South side just west of Stone Ave depot, on the side of Lyons Township H.S. I recall seeing the later one just recently with two box cars spotted at the building.

Can anyone help me out ?
