For most of us, when we think of surviving O-1As, we think of 4960 (no longer
looks like an O-1A) 4963 at the Illinois Railway Museum and 4978 on display at
the Mendota Depot. However, most of us don’t remember that there is a fourth
surviving O-1A. It is 4994 in Lubbock, TX at the National Ranching Heritage
Center. In the very early 1960s, Texas Tech University apparently asked the
FW&D to donate one of their steam locomotives to the school. At that time, all
FW&D steam locomotives had been scrapped. The FW&D contacted parent CB&Q and
arranged to purchase the 4994 which was due to be retired. The FW&D then
renumbered the locomotive as 401, an oil burner. The National Ranching Heritage
Center is located adjacent to the Texas Tech campus and that is where the
locomotive, two stock cars and a caboose are now located. The display is just
off 9th Street where it crosses the Marsha Sharp Freeway, US 82. The caboose
appears to be a wood CB&Q or FW&D caboose and the stock cars may also be
Q/FW&D. Attached is a poor quality street view photo of the display.

I have never seen photos of this locomotive on display at this location. Does
anyone have such photos that they could share? I would also appreciate
information about the cars and caboose as to origin. While I did find a few
photos at this site, http://www.trainweb.org/chris/2westex11.html, I am
surprised that more photos haven’t surfaced, considering it’s relatively public
location.
