My thanks to all who have asked after our welfare after yesterday’s 7.5 earthquake. It was centred on the east coast of the South Island, and we are towards the north of the North Island, so we are about 400 miles away. There have been over 800 aftershocks and large-scale damage but still only 2 deaths,. The only north-south railway line, which runs along that coast through numerous tunnels (together with the road which parallels it), is blocked and damaged and a freight train is apparently stuck between rock falls. It may be some considerable time before the road and rail links can be reopened
