For the record, 59 years ago, today, CB&Q oil burning O-5B no. 5632, made it’s
first run in fan trip service on a trip from Chicago to Galesburg. IL and
return. With that trip the Q set a new pattern for all future fan trip
operations on it’s property as well as others in which specific locomotives
were dedicated to fan trips. In December, coal burning O-1A no. 4960 would join
the 5632 as a second dedicated locomotive. After November 2nd, only one other Q
locomotive would be used on a fan trip and that was M4 class 2-10-4 no. 6315 in
September, 1959. Prior to November 2nd, locomotives were selected randomly for
fan trips, probably based on flue time and general condition. They were used
for one or two trips and then retired.
I rode the November 2nd trip as well as many other trips that the Q operated in
their 11 years of fan trips. It was a wonderful time for a kid in his teenage
years. Through that period, I developed some lifelong friendships as well as a
strong interest in railroading and a career in a related industry.
