We're not saying the photo doesn't date to the late 1860s or even early 1870s; it probably does.  But the locomotive has all the characteristics of one built no later than the mid-1850s.

I respectfully disagree IF you are dating the photo.

Silo on barn in background.

If silo invented by King
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_Hiram_King
en.wikipedia.org
Franklin Hiram King (8 June 1848 – 4 August 1911) was an American agricultural scientist who was born on a farm near Whitewater, Wisconsin, attended country schools ...

King born: 1848
fix an arbitrary age to invention +20
ca. 1868
possible age +30
= ca. 1878

however, wikipedia also says silo invented in 1873 by Hatch
https://www.bing.com/search?q=when+were+grain+silos+invented&pc=MOZI&form=MOZTSB

There are no rounded cab corners, cab window shoved forward makes it seem so

House (left) construction is not 1850

Maybe your trip to the Newberry will bring produce something for #275.
