Burlington's Fox River branch: freight and passenger
operations, LCL, mail, insider insights and stories, wrecks
At Railroad & Shortlines Club of Chicago
by Leo Phillipp
The Burlington's Fox River branch began life as an independent railroad at
Streator, Illinois, in 1869: the Ottawa, Oswego and Fox River Valley Railroad.
Built to a connection with the C.B. & Q. at Montgomery, it soon became part of
the Burlington.
To this day, the line is a major artery for silica sand from Ottawa and Wedron
that supplies the oil fracking industry.
The program will explore the history and current operations of the line
including passenger and freight operations, major shippers and their
commodities, wrecks, from an insider's view. The connecting short lines and
Class One competitors will also be discussed.
Our speaker worked the line as a brakeman and conductor. He has been a member,
speaker and writer for the Burlington Route Historical Society since 1982.
