The stack cover served another VITAL function in the life of an oil burner. Oil burners are notoriously hard on staybolts. An idle engine, with the fire extinguished, is subject to cold air entering the boiler and causing uneven cooling of the sheets. This uneven cooling can have disastrous effects on the bolts !!
