That's just freshly painted mineral red on the cab roof, and the bright red container beneath the cab holds a fire hose.  These containers were more often seen on the bottom of the tender side sill between the trucks, always on the fireman's side.

As well as a very bright red roof, there is also a bright red vertical panel (someone will no doubt know the correct technical term) under the cab.  I can’t recall seeing this on any other locomotive.
