An interesting tidbit from the two 1966 wheel reports I have for Train 97 Galesburg to Savanna is a large number of boxcars of refrigerators. These were all going to Gamble Skogmo who was a conglomerate of retail chains and other businesses that was headquartered in St. Louis Park, MN. The refrigerators were all in ATSF 40' boxcars - 16 of them on the two trains. The final destination for these refrigerators was: BENNING,
DC CHICAGO,
IL CICERO,
IL DOLTON,
IL HAMMOND,
IN NEW
ORLEANS, LA DETROIT,
MI (2 cars) TRINITY,
NC BAYLONISL,
NY FTEDWARD,
NY PLATTSBUR,
NY BELLEFONTE,
OH CLEVELAND,
OH (2 cars) PITTSBURG, PA Clearly
all these destinations are east of Chicago, with the exception of Chicago and
Cicero. All destinations would route through Chicago. So why not send these
boxcars straight through from Galesburg to Chicago instead of routing them up
to Savanna first? Again,
these cars are from two separate wheel reports, in fact the only two I have for
Train 97 from Galesburg to Savanna. So it seems this may have been normal
routing, but seems strange to go through Savanna. Tom
