I checked 5629 at the Colorado Railroad Museum this afternoon and the tender underframe is definitely a casting.

Noel,

According to Burlington Bulletin no. 33 on the hudsons, their tenders were built with Commonwealth cast steel underframes. I would assume that the eight northerns built at the same time also had Commonwealth cast steel underframes. Whether the later northerns had tenders with cast steel underframes or not, I don't know, but I can't imagine that they would go back to a fabricated frame. IIRC, the end sills of the later O-5 tenders were definitely cast, so I would suspect that they, too, had cast steel underframes.

Were the tender frames for the 0-5's cast as one piece or were they frabricated ? Any info greatly appreciated.
