Glen,

I have painted a few of these cars and I think what you are down to is the tarnished brass. Try scrubbing it down with a tooth brush and the new liquid Barkeepers friend. If that doesn’t bust through it CLR Liquid tarnish remover might work. What paint are you going to use? Mine were painted with Scalecoat Old Silver. A gloss coat of Future by Pledge Acrylic Floor Finish was applied full strength with a Paasche airbrush and the decals were from the society. I might have extras if you need them. I cut each letter out and applied per a Bat Masterson photo to line up precisely with each rivet. They run much longer than the strip on the decal sheet. Of course the letters had to be perfect as I was a graphic artist at the time. Microscale Sol and Set were used to snuggle over those rivets and a flat finish by Scalecoat was used. A little pre-weathering of a dark mix of Roof Brown and Black on the underframe and an application of PanPastel® weathering on the roof panels, ends  and underframe. I used cShades and Tints of colors like Burnt Sienna and Raw Umber. The PanPastel was sealed with Model Masters Flat. If you haven’t used or heard of those, please see my (shameless plug) blog on Modelingcolors.com.

The photos I have of the SSS car is a little washed out and the weathering is a little more subtle than it is. If you go to the Naperville RPM meets or this year, Trainfest in Milwaukee I usually have the car with me.

Sincerely,

Glen:

I forwarded your query on to Al Hoffman, who imported the cars under the Aurora Shops banner.  Hopefully you'll hear directly from him.

I have a question about the finish over the top of the brass on heavyweight passenger cars built by Aurora Shops Limited.  Were these undecorated brass cars finished with a dull, flat simulated brass finish over the original brass (rather than a clear coat)?

I purchased one of these cars second-hand with a poor paint job.  I can't seem to get it stripped down to the original brass.  It appears to have some sort of dull, flat simulated brass finish which I can't seem to cut with any kind of paint remover.  I have used paint stripper and even brake fluid.  I haven't tried lacquer thinner yet.

I am trying to figure out if I can quit the stripping process at this point and repaint, or if I need to keep stripping the car more.
