Just to add to the WP Challenger information, they were assigned to Elko NV and ran from there to Salt Lake City. They were restricted from California as they were coal burners and banned from California.

Hol - Some months ago, you posted an image of WP Challenger No. 402 being "beautified" at the Aurora Shops prior to being displayed at the 1949 Chicago Railroad Fair. It was mentioned that an image of WP 402 pulling a freight in Suburban Territory had appeared in an early issue of TRAINS magazine.

 

The same image appears in the Summer 2015 issue of CLASSIC TRAINS on page 66 with explanatory text on page 68. The image shows WP 402 westbound with a freight train at Belmont Avenue in Downers Grove on July 21, 1949. The "beautified" Challenger is headed home to California. Best Regards - Louis
