I think companies deliberately distort history to show a strong presence in an 
area.

The Safeway store where my Mom lives proudly states inside the store that they 
have served the city for over 125 years.   Trouble is, the city has been in 
existence for only 10 to 15 years, the area where the store is has only been 
developed for about 30 to 35 years, and Colorado has only been a state since 
1876!    The math don't add up!
