I finally uploaded the photo index spreadsheet I have been working on since last December! I have been going through my books and various websites putting together a photo index to document locomotives found on trains on the C&I and going through/to Savanna and Oregon. Since I model this line from 1965-1970 basically the last half of the 60's, last days of the Q) I wanted to show photographic evidence of actual locomotives and consists found on the line. While I still have a few books, bulletins, Zephyrs, etc. to go through, I feel that what I have so far is very sufficient to get the ball rolling to show just what the consist mixes were like and what could definitely show up on trains in this period. Here are a few excerpts: I have documented all diesel road switcher models except for: GP9, SD7, U28C I have confirmed pooled power in these later years included a GN U28B, EL GP35's, an EL C-425, an EL U33C, and UP U50. EL SD45's and SDP45's were common in pool power, as well as NYC 4-axle U-boats and GP35/40's. NYC seemed to favor the U-boats. Also confirmed PC and PRR painted units. On the book photos list I broke down the percentages for number of units in consists (I know someone asked this question earlier on the list - how many locomotives did the Q use on its freight trans). Book photo now shows the following statistics: Anywhere from one to five (1-5) locomotives were used on trains, but the single unit trains were basically wayfreights/pick-ups. These single unit trains could use almost any GP, not just GP7's. While GP7's were common on the Eola-Oregon turn, the wayfreights/pick-up out of Savanna could have GP7's, GP30's, GP40's or even an F-Unit! If you ignore the single unit trains, the most common lash-ups were 3-4 units. Here is the breakdown: 2 Locomotives: 18% 3 Locomotives: 27% 4 Locomotives: 39% 5 Locomotives: 15% (I realize this only adds up to 99% but that is because of rounding.) Websites that have been checked include Jan Kohl's Castle Graphics, and I have started, but not completed, rrpicturearchives.net (RRPA). The best find on RRPA was the three unit train in 1968 with a GN U28B as the trailing unit, and the four unit train in July 1969 with an EL GP35 and C-425! It is nice to find an Alco Century actually working on the Q C&I line. (I have confirmed UP C-630's and PC/PRR Alco RS's and Centuries to Galesburg and on to Denver). Of course the UP U50 also on the C&I is nice, but I have known about that for some time and mentioned it before on this group. Finally, even though I am mainly a locomotive guy, since this has to do with Q trains, I have also noted any interesting cars or car placements in these trains, especially when it comes to HO models available. As I get through more books and websites I will update the list and group with what I find. If anyone else has additional photo evidence I will appreciate your updates! BTW, I also have some interesting updates on the wheel reports that have been posted thanks to Bill Hirt and Russ Strodtz, and those will be posted soon.
