Jonathan Find attached two photos of what the inside of a Rushton stack (cabbage) looks like. Most steam engines had what was called netting inside the smoke-box as well as more netting in or above the stack. The netting was actually more like bars about a quarter or half inch to form nets. This cabbage stack went over the top and I think the diamond stack was similar. Note in the first photo the hole worn out by the cinders.
