TELL TALE EXTRA: SEASONED EATINGS!

Wyoming's own Al Krug and Berlin's own Inez Mischitz recently walked into the most expensive hotel in St. Louis. Upon entering the hotel restaurant, Al buttonholed a waiter and wailed, ''I have a pal here for dinner that's been subsisting for years on cereals and short stogies. We have got more than Bernhardts tent full of money and we want the nose bags crammed with all the Chief Deveries de cuisine. Object is no expense.'' Inez, never a parvenu, demanded, ''You see the chef and order a dinner for us such as you serve to Dave Francis and the general passenger agent of the Iron Mountain when they eat here!''

MINESTRONE MILANESE
A large recipe. Divide and freeze.

One-quarter pound ham, finely diced
One-quarter pound fresh pork, finely diced
Four tablespoons butter
One-and-one-half cups minced onions
One cup minced green onions and tops
One-and-one-half cups minced carrots
One-and-one-half cups minced celery
One-and-one-half cups diced turnips
One-and-one-half cups shredded cabbage
One clove garlic
Two teaspoons salt
Four quarts beef stock
Three cups diced potatoes
Two cups crushed tomatoes
One-quarter bunch parsley
One cup peas
One cup diced green beans
One-quarter cup rice
One-half teaspoon pepper

DIRECTIONS
In eight-quarter kettle, sautee ham and pork in butter.
Add onions, carrots, celery, turnips and cabbage.
Sautee all lightly -- do not brown.
Chop garlic with salt until very fine and add to mixture.
Add beef stock, remaining vegetables and rice.
Add pepper; adjust seasoning if necessary.
Cook approximately two hours, stirring occasionally.
Makes seven quarts.
