Mention of Earle Carter in my previous post called to mind a couple of items relating to him that showed up on eBay in the past year or two. Both are attached. Earle's job was to monitor the performance of the C&S-FW&D and handling the U.S. Mail, as well as baggage and express. He was the railroad's liaison with the Post Office in Denver (and thus the involvement of Post Office employees in the annual fishing trip), and he was a regular visitor to Denver Union Station to check on the arrival and departure of the Texas Zephyr and trains 7-8, the trains on the Denver-Fort Worth-Dallas run. The photo shows Earle talking with the conductor of the Texas Zephyr as it loaded passengers prior to a 12:45 p.m. departure for the south, while cooks in dining car "Silver Grill" observe the passengers they will soon be serving as No. 1 heads for Texas. The other item is Earle's 1960-61 Western Union pass that allowed him to send messages at no cost anywhere along the lines of the C&S. Trivia, but reflective of an era now long gone. Hol
