Ok, it's too quiet on this list. In the interest of getting a conversation
going......
Under the work agreements,if a train/engine crew, other than, a Wayfreight
crew, handled company material or mail in route they were entitled to
Wayfreight rate. To give you some idea of the magnitude of the variance between
thru frt and way frt rate in the 70s it was less than $2 a hundred. In English
that means $2 for basic day. On passenger the variance probably was closer to
$3 for a basic day.
In prior decades the variance would have been lower, so......For many jobs
there was a daily contest.
Where did mgmt hide a piece of company material or mail on this train.
The BRT files are full of claims from trainman on the Northerns and mainline
Zephyrs out of Chicago for finding company material tucked into
lockers, cabinets, etc for drop off at points beyond their territory. Some
trainman spent an inordinate amount of time searching the train for company
material.
That's not say engine crews were not above the same activity. They would search
the units thoroughly for parts stuck in the nose, etc for points west.
I recall reading more than one declination response that said "ok the next time
I find company material on the train or engine it will go in the Rock or
Mississippi River if the company doesn't want to pay me for handling".
Yes, Pete this is sharp shooting at its best.
Even in the 1970s this little battle persisted. I worked with one Condr in the
C&I pool ,who when ordered eastbound from Savanna would find his way into the
mail drawer inside the yard office and find at least one piece of company mail
headed to points east on the Aurora or Chgo div.
His nickname was Gabby. After leaving town he would radio the head end and
advise "way frt rate this trip account handling company mail".
By the mid70s mgmt had,had enough and a notice came out. No Wayfreight pay for
handling company mail,except on Wayfreights.
By the late 70s mgmt was placing a box of company mail on one of the bunks in
the w/c on 97 out of Cicero. It was a pretty good size box with mail for
Savanna and La Crosse, etc. Please refer to the notice mentioned above.
Depending on the attitude of the Condr on 97 that trip the mail disappeared
before it got to Savanna, was delivered to Savanna yard office or was just left
on the bunk when the Aurora crew detrained at Savanna.
As the saying goes, working for the RR is a love/hate relationship.
