 My first thought when I saw this picture was that they looked very familiar.  
In a book for the 125 year celebration of Streator is a picture of workers at 
the International Banana Crate factory posing with several banana crates which 
appear to be the same size and construction as what is shown in your picture.  
"The Story of Streator" has a drawing of one and at that time it was the Frank 
J. Schmitz company.  Just tossing out a possibility.
