My late father in "44, after nearly 3 yrs in the Pacific, took a troop train from Cal to Creston, Iowa (on a TDY to speak to Scout troops re: scrap drives)and on the Q portion of the trip there was a waycar at the end of all the Army troop sleepers & kitchen cars (I've been told this was common practice by the Burlington & most RR's when trains consisted of those special blt Army cars as opposed to conventional passenger equipment.) Anyway that Q waycar & the fact that my Dad's father was a Q Emp @ Grand Crossing Shops meant he got to ride the waycar inc. home cooked meals by the crew - having family connections does help!
