Charlie and others,
As an interesting aside on this discussion on wagon wheel antennas, visit the Castle Graphics web site at
It is a photo of M1 2-10-2, no. 6002 equipped with a wagon wheel antenna immediately behind the smoke stack. The photo was taken in Cicero in 1947. I would guess that the locomotive was assigned to switching service in the yard. Was this the only Q steam locomotive equipped with a wagon wheel antenna?
Bill Barber Gravois Mills, MO Mon Jan 20, 2014 3:23 pm (PST) . Posted by:Some time ago John Uehling was kind enough to send me a disk of photos of a Wagon Wheel Antenna in his possession that he carefully and thoroughly measured.
The dimensions that Sam posted are in agreement with what John measured. I will try to process the jpegs so I can post them in the next few days.
“Back in the Day” All Nations Hobby Shop used to have a white metal ship’s wheel that was just the right size and number of spokes for HO but they ran out of them around 1964 and the shop has been gone for 35 years…..
