At least in the 50's, B&B gangs painted the last digit of the year they painted buildings and bridges. I suppose the idea was that it would not be more than ten years between paintings but of course, this was an ideal that was seldom if ever met! The bridge near my home has a 1956 date on it. Another reason a lot of bridges are never painted anymore is that they painted with lead based paint and the surface needs to be sandblasted and that's a big no no these days.

I would agree with Pete that these are paint dates.  Even the St. Francis, Kan., turntable, which is now in use at the Colorado Railroad Museum, had its last paint date (1927!!) stenciled on it when it arrived at the museum.

My guess is that it was the year painted   There were also some locations where the mileage from some designated point was painted, but these numbers don't seem to be that kind of number which would be a 3 digit number.

All,
While looking through some early photos of Burlington depots on Lines West I noticed small numbers underneath the depot name on the ends of some of the depots. They seem to be on photos of depots early in the century and are very small and I couldn’t read them on a number of photos but was able to read the following: Arapahoe 8-07, Madrid 08, Red Cloud 04. Could these be the year built? Maybe the one with a dash is month and year? Any help would be appreciated.
