The XM-20 had an inside height of 8 ft. They measured 12 ft. 9 in. from railhead to the roof line on the sides. This made them visibly shorter than later cars with 9 to 10 ft. inside height. These cars were on the ORER into the early 1950s, so they were frequently seen in a consist with ‘modern’ steel boxcars like XM-32, producing a ‘low-slung’ appearance, when actually, they were perfectly normal height for their era. These cars were built between 1915 and 1917.

The XM-20, XM-21, XM-22, and XM-23 were all built to the same plan. Early cars had a Murphy roof, but the XM-23 got the Hutchins roofs, which made them an inch or so taller. I just built several Westerfield kits of these cars, and they really look good in a consist with XM-30, XM-31, and XM-32 boxcars. For a real height contrast, couple some to an extended height XA-14.
