If you can get ahold of Al Holck's  Hub of Burlington lInes West or  Wymore Story by Richard Kistler you can get most of your questions resolved as to the operation of the Nebraska Branch line network..

Also "hot off the press is Jim Reisdorff's new book...Burlington Northern Railroad   BRANCH LINES....The Nebraska Experience.   This book is brand new....I happen to be one of the "assistant authors" and am pretty familiar with the operation of all of these lines

It's too much to write about on here....If you are interested enough and want to discuss this stuff in detail...just post it on here and I'll give you my phone number and we can talk about all of it....Probablly will take a couple of hours or more..dependingon how much detail you want.

The MR guide to livestock railroading whet my appetite to learn more about cattle country. Most intriguing is the grid of branches in Central Nebraska:

Wymore to Crete
Fairmont to Helvey
Fairmont to Hebron
Benedict to Clay Center
Edgar to Bruning
Burwell to Nelson
Palmer to Sargent
Jeffers to Huntley
DeWitt to Holdredge

How did the CB&Q operate these branches, especially during cattle-shipping season? Did locals go between crossing points on the grid? Did pickup-setout trains marshal the loads from each crossing point? What engines were commonly used?

It would be interesting to know how a railroad could operator a "checkerboard" pattern of branches efficiently. The CB&Q is a fascinating railroad.
