Subject: [CBQ] re: Dubuque Depot

Those who attended the BRHS Annual Meet in Dbq about 5 yrs ago or so had part of the program in the restored depot. There have also been photos of the old & new in at least two Zephyr issues as well as mention in the BB on Burlington bus lines. When CB&N came thru East Dubuque (then called "Dunleith") they arranged for rights to use the IC's bridge to access Dubuque. The depot in E. Dbq was always IC's with CB&N nee CB&Q as a tenant right up thru to "71 BN (the existing E. Dbq depot is still used by CN for storage & had a canopy, etc - this can be seen in a Zephyr a couple yrs ago, check Rupert Gamlens wonderful indices to find all I have referenced - BRHS mbrship pays off!)
Anyway CB&N/CB&Q had considerable business in Dbq, interchanging with Milw (IC & CGW interchange done mostly on the Illinois side) and local business inc. Dubuque Star Brewery, Dubuque Boat & Iron Works, etc.
The standard brick freight house was restored & is part of the Great River museum complex (Smithsonian affiliate). The restored/rebuilt depot is the former post-War rebuild wherein new walls of a vaguely art deco style were placed around old brick walls and the top razed. CB&N did use 'Burlington' as a embedded stone name in a couple of their major depots. The Burlington trackage left the IC & circled all the way back to the bridge terminating @ the brewery (the latter track, unused for yrs, was just pulled up in the last decade). Dbq was busy enough that the Q & BN assigned a switcher; the last wood waycar used was for a long time displayed at the Ham House Museum @ Eagle Point Park on N end of Dbq before deteriorating. Take a tour of the depot (like the freight house, part of the Great River Museum) for vintage photos, etc. There is also a good in-print book on Dbq RR's that has good Q coverage. Steam excursions in the "60's had the entire train come over the bridge to Dubuque. Gerald (former Dbq'er)
