Yes and to add to the confusion don't forget the "green" scheme of the late 60's.

There are certainly standard paint schemes that apply to various kinds of rolling stock, but they also varied with time.  Boxcars, as you say, were painted mineral red until the Q adopted the Chinese Red scheme in the very late 1950s.  These two schemes applied to much of the CB&Q's rolling stock, including hoppers, flatcars and stockcars, but there were always variations -- like some black, orange and even silver (aluminum) hoppers.  Reefers were yellow, except for the later insulated boxcars which were painted green with a broad yellow stripe.  Covered hoppers began with a mineral red scheme, though there were some early gray airslide cars as well; there were also a few black cars before a near universal gray scheme was adopted for all new cars in the 1960s.  To be accurate requires knowing which car at which time you're attempting to model and then some research (which can certainly include posting a question here!).

Did the Q have a "color code" for the colors of their rolling stock? The rolling stock I have seems to follow a pattern - Q box cars are a rusty brown, reefers are red, stock cars are yellow, etc. Was this a true pattern, or did the railroads use what was available and cheap?
