William,

RRs still use spring switches where the application justifies it. There is one at La Claire, IA on the CP at the north end of the siding. UP uses them on their line south out of KC at their Martin City helper siding. The Nebraska Zephyr went through the one at La Claire on it's way home from the Rock Island Rail Fest in 2011.

A true Spring Switch, was pretty rare, in that they sprung back on every wheel that went through it. Leo is right, some were fitted with a retarder, that let it come back kinda like a storm door. They were a nightmare to maintain. I seen a few, one in particular came off the Afton sub around Miami, Oklahoma on to the Tulsa main. They did not stay in service long, they shook apart. Most of them was designated in the timetable. They had a real limited use.
