In the days of order string and Morning Zephyrs it was a common task to save all the order string ya grabbed ‘cause ya never knew when something might need to be "fixed". Order string was also quite helpful when bundling newspapers for the morning "paper route". 21 was a great "delivery vehicle" for this paper route ! The on-duty time of the crew allowed sufficient time for "harvesting" the morning papers from the dinkey’s after shoving into CUSCo. from 14th. St. In the 60’s Chigago had three major papers so the harvest could be impressive !! This is when the order string became critically important. Sorting and assembling the papers was important to our trackside "customers". Also of importance was proper bundling since, at normal track speed, the papers would be badly shredded by the delivery method used. Big, tightly wrapped bundles of newspapers can be destructive at 90 mph. if care is not excersized when "delivering" them. I would always aim for Gran’ma and Gran’pas front yard to aviod knockin’ my customers over when the bundle hit the ground. This delivery went without incident for the years I had the route but the same cannot be said for the delivery to the Section at the east end of Milledgville. More on that later. Karl __._,_.___
