Brian-

The answer is yes.

The term is derived from the negotiation for a reduced rate sense of the verb.   ’ A ticket issued at a reduced rate by a railroad or other transportation company for passage over a given route for a specified number of trips.”    We think of it as being applied to high-volume traffic corridors but the arrangement was more generally applied.   For example, the Wisconsin Central/Chicago & Northern Pacific/SOO had commutation tickets for “commutes” as far away from Chicago as Waukesha, WI.

On the CB&Q there were examples in a few places but I don’t have any citations to give you so I won’t go into any unsupported instances here.

This would be a good topic for a future Bulletin or Zephyr article for those with timetable collections to research!!!!

Did the Q run any other commuter operations outside the race track in Illinois? Was there any commuter operation in the Twin Cities area by NP or GN if there was no CB&Q?
