Regarding the composite gons, I worked for the Iowa Highway Department (now Iowa DOT) during the summers of 1957-1959 as a materials inspector. I'm not sure which summer it was, but Comanche Limestone quarry SW of Farmington, Iowa on the CB&KC branch was loading them with rip-rap. I don't remember exactly how many cars the siding into the quarry could hold but I'm thinking 8-10. Some loads were shoved into the interchange track in Farmington for movement over the RI, others held in the siding in Farmington until they had around 20 cars or so that were to move on the Q. That meant a GP-7 was assigned that day to handle the train, but even then it sometimes meant doubling the hill up to Dry Ridge east of Farmington. I vividly remember riding the cab of the Geep during a thunderstorm one night as they took the first cut up the hill. It seems to me there was a siding at Franklin about midway between Farmington and Donnelson, but I'm open to correction by you guys with the track charts. To this old geezer that was a long time ago and as you know, memory is about the first thing to go. Jack Ferris ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
