A good example of how technology has replaced workers with out opening new jobs.
Also with out the paper trail to provide for historical research

Subject: [CBQ] Reports ?,what reports ?

Thank you Pete as you have answered a long standing question of mine. How were cars traced before computers,AEI,tags, spins, compass and any type of computerization !

In 1979/80 when I worked at 547 W Jackson as staff assistant to Regional Mgr Trains and Terminals(Joe Arrington at the time) one of my duties was to supervise the car tracing bureau. There were 5 or 6 clerks sitting at CRTs. The phone would ring with a query on car(s) location(s) and they would punch in the car # and respond with the info to the caller.

Today I can sit at my lap top or iphone and use one of several RR web sites or AAR sites to trace a car anywhere myself in seconds.
