Only John and I remember the old radio JINGLE..."UPON MY SOUL...THAT GREEN MARKED COAL...BEATS ANY COAL I'VE SEEN"....Sung, IIRC to the tune of..."THE WEARIN' OF THE GREEN"...an Irish ballad.

Isn't it remarkable how "one thing leads to another"....I once said to my wife..."That reminds me of something"...Her response.."EVERYTHING REMINDS YOU OF SOMETHING"....I often say..."My mind is full of useless trivia"...Lots of it comes out here.

Pete

Abbreviation quiz
Here are the answers. Some of these may have more than one meaning (a/c and WB come to mind), depending on the context in which they are used, so I picked only one, you may say the more obscure.
a/c= account
A1= first class (freight rate when using "class" rates instead of "commodity" rates)
AFE= authority for expenditure
B/A= billed at
BK= break (used by telegraphers to tell the senders to stop transmitting)
BO= bad order
Bsk= basket
Bx= box
C&E= conductor and engineer
COTS= cleaned, oiled, tested and stenciled (I threw this one in after someone mentioned it)
Jct= junction
Jt= joint
K= standard clock
K.D.= knocked down (and K.D.F. was knocked down flat)
Ld= load
LFVC= loaded to full visible capacity ( this is an outgrowth of a rule by the Office of Defense Transportation during WWII, that open top cars be "loaded to full visible capacity" and the rule stayed in effect for many years after the war)
MT= empty
NES= not elsewhere specified
NOIBN= not otherwise indexed by name
Ntfy= notify
O= track scale (interesting since there is not one "O" in "track scale")
OS= on sheet
OS&D= over, short and damaged
P.H.P. packing house products
RIP= repair in place
Rpt= report
Sk= sack
S.U.= set up
W&F= water and feed(way bill direction as to location to feed and water livestock)
W/C= way car
WB= waybill (and its brother BL= bill of lading)
WW&IB= Western Weighing and Inspection Bureau

There is one that only Southern Illinois coal field railroaders used. GMOT = green marked oil treated. It was used on waybills from the Old Ben Coal Corporation mines.
