James,

The letters on the pillars for the Aurora,IL depot platforms between the mainlines were to designate passenger loading spots. As a crew member and passenger here's briefly how it worked. When a passenger purchased a ticket he would be told by the agent to stand at specific letter area that corresponded with his ticket destination. Sleeper/Pullman passenger cars were spotted in certain areas and then the various thru and short coaches likewise had designated areas. The plan was to stop the trains with the cars lined up with these general letter marked areas to make train boarding effiicient and not have passengers running up and down the platform.

This was in addition to the car # designation such as CZ 17,etc.

I do not recall letters on the pillars for the suburban loading tracks/yard tracks.

Leo Phillipp

Hi All,

Can someone explain to me the significance of the letters that are hanging from the covered platforms or on the pillars supporting the covered platforms at Aurora, IL Station?

It looks likes Platforms 1 and 2 (servicing track 2 and 3) are labeled A through K and are spaced approximately 5 pillars apart. I also see T on Platform 2, but I don't know what the significance is of that.

Did platforms 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 have these letters, and if so, does anyone know what they were and what they mean?

James
