List,

I have seen (and have) lots of pictures of EA shovel nose A units combined with an E-5 B unit circa 1949 - particularly on the Twin Cities route pulling the TCZ.  This combination would produce 3800 hp (1800 for the EA-A unit and 2000 for the E-5 B unit.)  During the same time period, did the Q run the E-5 A unit with one of the two EA B units?  This combination would have provided 3200 hp (200 for the E-5 A and 1200 for the EA B unit.)  This should have been more than enough power for the TCZ, yet I don't recall seeing pictures of this combination in the late forties.  Perhaps the EA B units were still otherwise assigned?

This is a specific question for 1949-1950.  I know what happened after the EA B units were turned into "boosters" and they were used on such trains as the Empire Builder and North Coast Limited.
