[CBQ] Steam Restoration

This is not directly CB&Q related, but it is about an old Santa Fe steam engine, No. 3463. So I guess that makes it peripheral. :-)

 

I received my October issue of Wired Magazine. On page 48 is a story about the restoration of the engine. It’s being done to running condition, but using new technology. They are going to modify the boiler and engine to double thermal efficiency, reshape the exhaust so it breaths better and the firebox to run on biocoal. The 2 groups working on this Sustainable Rail International and the University of Minnesota, say, when they are done, it will run cleaner than a diesel and cheaper than diesel-electrics.

 

The head of SRI says they are thinking along the lines of this is where steam might have gone, if development had continued.
