Attendees at the St. Paul meet got to see a partial draft of the new
Burlington Waycars Drawings book (a pre-publication special was offered to the
list a month or so ago) Response was excellent with several reserving same
with the expiring promo price. If you have yet to decide whether to buy one,
here's some data. (it goes to printer in 10 days) As I understand, the number
to be printed will be limited to actual reservations only, no overprint, so it
will be a once in a lifetime buy.
Overall there are 300+ drawings and 90+ photos in an 11" x 17" coil-bound
(similar to special heavyweight passenger drawings book that Bill Glick
produced a few years ago). By my count, with more to be added, drawings cover
56 individual waycars or classes including 4 C&S and 10 FW&D as well as B&MR, a
CW as converted to MoW service and Dynamometer #204725. Shown too are Q
waycars sold to other railroads, Drovers, Black Hills narrow gauge and two and
three variations each of NE10, 12 & 13. Some drawings are from the Waycars
book itself, some redone or one of the 45 newly done by Bill Glick
and some 'newly' discovered.
Paint colors/lettering are shown and a plethora of detail parts including
bunks, cupola lamp, canvas fire bucket and the 'cellars' (called "possum
bellies" on some railroads). Most body drawings are shown both in HO and O
scales as this book is designed to assist modelers as well as fans. Glick's
drawings show both sides and both ends as there are variations.
One addition being made this week, per conversation I had with Ken Martin at
St. Paul, are newly discovered CB&Q drawings of the unusual grab irons and
other accessories on roofs and cupolas (Ken spent considerable time at the
Colorado RR Museum enroute to St. Paul - thanks Ken!) There is also newly
added technical data from the 1920's CB&Q Educational Bulletins used by shop
forces. I further understand if someone has a unique photo or data not
included in the big Waycars book, get it to MP206 immediately so it can be
considered for inclusion with this Drawings book. I know from experience a LOT
of Q fans have a data, photos, etc that they never consider sharing not because
they are greedy but because they assume it is "common". When in doubt, compare
to what is already in Waycars; you may indeed have a unique item to share with
fellow enthusiasts! Gerald Edgar
