I know it isn't directly relevant to the current conversation about the colour of slag ballast, but the following was reported in 1887 when the Burlington took control of the Hannibal & St Joseph and started improvements. The note commented
".....the eastern division is being ballasted with gravel, the middle with burned gumbo and the Cameron & Kansas City division with stone".

So if you are modelling the H&StJ in 1887 .......
