While it is not RR related, I will second the suggestion to go to Poopy's on route 84. My kids have taken us there several times. Technically, it is a biker restaurant / bar, but the food is good and plenty of it. While you are there, your wife can get a tattoo at the adjacent tattoo parlor, like my wife did. It was on her "bucket" list!.
As someone else suggested, Galena is close by and worth the visit. Somewhat touristy, but if you can get by that, a well preserved older mining town. Another location, if you haven't been there Palisades State Park, just north of Savanna. A number of famous Q publicity photos were taken from that locale.
For anyone familiar with Savanna from years ago, it has changed over the years, particularly along the BNSF tracks. Still quite busy, but it doesn't have the charm of years past.
