The idea of the Burlington gaining its own connection to the Pacific coast was
frequently mooted in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. For example, in 1878 the Engineering News reported -
It a current topic of talk in railroad circles that the Chicago, Burlington &
Quincy are quietly negotiating to extend their road to
California by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Road. As the managers of the
latter road were formerly Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
men, the "symptoms" are decidedly favorable to a breaking out in that direction.
Seven years later, the Engineering News of 1885 said -
Rumors are again current that the Burlington will soon begin work on its
extension to the Pacific ocean. The latest route mapped out
for the road from Denver is through Boulder Canyon, thence into Middle Park,
tunneling the Continental divide under James Peak. This
tunnel will be 9,000 feet long, the longest west of the Mississippi river. It
strikes the Grand River Valley several miles below the
mouth of the Blue, thence it proceeds down the Grand to Grand Junction, and
through Utah and Nevada to California. Some work has
been done on the grade in the Boulder canyon and Middle Park. The tunnel
through James Peal will take at least two years to build.
In 1897, Railway Review stated -
According to press dispatches the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy will soon have a
through line to the Pacific coast. This will
necessitate the building of a line across Colorado from Lyons, the terminus of
the Colorado branch, and run through Left Hand canyon
in Boulder county, thence across the range to Routee county, tapping the Hahns
Peak region, thence to Utah, passing through Ogden
and ending at Salt Lake. The proposed route across Colorado was surveyed some
time ago, and it will require but little work to
replace the stakes that have been lost. At Salt Lake the road will connect with
the Oregon Short Line and the Southern Pacific, thus
allowing the Burlington to tap the entire Pacific coast.
Four years later, Railway Age commented -
Will the Burlington be extended to Salt Lake and to a connection for
California? There are those who believe that Mr. Hill and his
associates are interested in Senator Clark's enterprise for a new road between
Salt Lake and Los Angeles, and that the Burlington
will be the connecting link which will complete a system stretching from Puget
Sound through Idaho, Utah, Nevada and California to
San Diego Bay, with lines reaching down to the Gulf of Mexico and easterly to
the great lakes.
