Yes, Noel I did part of what you outlined...Summer 1956 I spent two weeks on the Hastings-Huntley local using Motorcar 9769 as power.  On Monday Wednesday and Friday we made a Huntley Turn out of Hastings Via Ayr Jct (North of Blue Hill)...

On Tuesday and Thursday we ran Hasting-Sutton thence north to Lushton...turned the motor there and traveled back to Sutton and thence down to Clay Center..We backed up waycar first from Clay Center to Sutton and then headed back to Hastings.

I think the abandonment from McCool to Lushton was done in 1955.  It was gone in 56 and we turned at Lushton.

The highway crossing affair you mentioned was covered in Al Holck's  HUB OF BURLINGTON LINES WEST.  There are a couple of pictures of the burned MC sitting in the yard at Lincoln.  I can look up the date if you like..I don't have  HUB...here at the computer, but I'm sure Al recorded the date and I can find it for you if you would like to have it.

I never worked any of the Branch lines north (Benedict) from York or South  (McCool Jct) south.  I'm sure that you know that the line from York to Benedict has been rehabed for grain train service.  The line south to McCool including the bridge over I 80 is gone also..I think the old elevator still stands at McCool, but I would'nt die for that fact..It may be gone now.

The old KC&O was a colorful railroad.  Some of the men I worked with that summer had worked on the entire KC&O from Alma to Stromsburg and had lots of stories to tell...Some of them may have been true.  I was fortunate to have experienced branch line railroading in its last years...

Pete,
Did you ever do a local run to York, Benedict, McCool or Lushton? I remember when a gravel truck hit the doodlebug at the US 81 grade crossing in McCool in the very late 40’s or early 50’s . Hit the left hand corner of the unit as it was going to Lushton. Knocked her in the ditch and she caught fire. The engineer, who my dad knew very well, escaped by kicking out the roof hatch. The truck driver was killed. My dad who was working on the Lushton water tower could see the wreck and we could see the smoke from York. The burned out hulk sat in the York yard for several weeks on freight trucks. Pictures? Who takes pictures…mumble mumble etc.  This was all on the old KC&O line. They took up the line between McCool and Lushton sometime in the early 60’s I think.

Having spent a considerable number of nights in said combines I can confirm Hol's statement...In addition to the normal "appurtenances" on combines used where branch line locals tied up in towns where electricity was available they were equipped with the regular 110 volt wiring and light fixtures so the crew could have almost all the "comforts of home.

I spent my final days with the CB&Q on the Fairmont Hildreth local where we had one of the converted motor car trailers...Sadly I never wrote downt the number.  When we tied up at Hildreth sometime in the wee hours of the morning and after the switching was done and the waycar (combine) spotted behind the depot th e conductor would be standing by with the long extension cord plugged into an outlet on the corner of the depot.  He would walk over and insert the "female" end of the cord into the receptical about floor height on the side of the car and   VOILA...we had 110 volt 100 watt lighting over the "let down" table where we enjoyed our "post midnight" repast and made minimal "ablutions" before bedding down for a few hours of  dark sleep.

Rupert:

Yes, the former motor car combines were all (except for the straight baggage ones) fitted out with conductor's desks and other waycar appurtenances, as they were specifically intended for mixed train use.

When an ex-motor car combine brought up the markers on a train in lieu of a waycar, was the combine fitted out to provide facilities for the crew?
