Here are a few updates regarding things I have learned about the CB&Q 40'
Combination Door Cars from some very kind members of this group. These cars
were built in two series. The first series #4100-41599 were built as XM-2's.
The next group of cars in series #41699-41899 were built as XM-2A's according
to the diagram a fellow modeler sent along. I am not certain as to why there
were two build groups designated for these cars. Someone has postulated that
the car dimensions changed. From what has been reported in the ORER's that
doesn't appear to be the case. Here is something else I learned that other
BBFCL members all probably know quite well. After 1963 the AAR, ICC and FRA
all allowed for an increase in freight car capacity from 100000 to 110000 lbs.
The original "as-built" 1959-1960 (XM-2's) and 1961 (XM-2A's) combination door
cars would have been stenciled according to the old capacity limits and then
when reshopped or reweighed according to rules given new stencils for capacity
data. Since there are very few photos (I still have yet to find one) for cars
that show "as-built" stencils it is hard to know the "as-built" Lt Wt for these
cars. If you have a photo of an "as-built" XM-2 or XM-2A please share it.
Beginning in 1958-59 the CB&Q changed their corporate image on freight cars.
This change commenced with the construction at the Havelock, NE shops with the
last series of 40' box cars built by the CB&Q, the XM-32F's. The new XM-32F's
and XM-2 box cars had a new color, Chinese red (changed from the original CB&Q
mineral red), and new graphics package featuring Gothic stenciling (changed
from the old Railroad Roman) for reporting marks and data. These cars also
had a change from the pre-1958 slanted and very bold "Everywhere West" (EW) and
"Way of the Zephyrs" (WOZ) slogans on their car sides to a new straight across
Gothic style lettering, a less flamboyant style. The new "EW" and "WOZ" slogans
also featured a new crisp slim white line above and below the slogan. The
Burlington Route herald was also given a new look. It now featured a white
line before and after the logo on the car side. This stenciling scheme was
somewhat modified as cars were reshopped and repainted. The white lines before
and after the Burlington Route herald disappeared as did the "EW" and "WOZ"
slogans and narrow white lines on the right hand panels of the car sides. Both
of these CB&Q schemes are well known to CB&Q modelers.
If anyone has photos of "as-built" CB&Q 40' combination door cars from either
group, the #4100-41599 or the #41600-41899 group please share them with me.
All other photos of 40' combination door cars are also welcome.
For modelers who desire a more prototypically correct model of 40' combination
door cars differing from what was previously available, such a model is now
possible for the CB&Q, NP and GN cars of that era. For resin cast mini-kits and
resin cast car sides to kit-bash and build accurate combo door cars one can
enquire to Chad Boas at his e-mail address. (chadboas@yahoo.com). For correct
decals one can visit Jerry Glow's decal site.
(http://home.comcast.net/~jerryglow/decals.html) Cars manufactured for these
three RR's were eventually all transferred to the BN and could still be seen in
photographs in their original paint schemes up to around 1982 when thousands of
cars met their fate at scrappers across the US.
