[CBQ] Steam era rail weights

As a rule of thumb you can assume the main line was laid with 85-90 pound rail with 65 pound used on sidings and yard tracks.  When I worked on C&S tie and B&B gangs in the early 1970s, much of the trackage north of Denver was still laid with those weights.  This would pretty much dictate the use of Code 70 rail (still over-size, but good for appearance) for your main line.  The C&S was pretty diligent about keeping the ballast and ties in good shape, which allowed the use of 2-10-2 and 4-8-2 locomotives at the relative slow speeds of the operation.  Hope this is of some use.  Jim Sandrin
