Unfortunately automic couplers were not automatic and failed routinely. I have very personal first hand knowledge of this fact. As reference see the federal law as to the rights of those affected when the automic coupler doesnt work.

Wasn't the era of link and pin couplers?  Coupling on didn't just involve banging into the cars and hoping that the pin dropped

(No white flags or lights to identify it as an extra, nor any marker lights on the rear!)
