I am retired Army Field Artillery (15 years active, 18 reserves).  I had to have a cadiovascular proceedure two years ago, requiring an two night hospital stay.  AS this was unplanned, I asked their security of take my wallet etc.  When the young female officer came up, she took one look at my keyring and said, " Your are ex-military".  She then held up the P-38 on the key ring and added that all ex-military seem to carry them.
It was a useful took.  Opens cans, can be used as a screw driver, a small pry bar, and with care, can even tighten or loosen Phillips head screws.
I always had a stash of C-rats, in Nam.  Being Artillery, I learned to open the cracker can, and partially fill it with gas from a handy quarter ton, mix in about 50 dirt, and light it.  Made a nice little stove to heat the other items in the pack that needed heating without flaring up.  These were great little multipurpose tools.
