For those more interested in the shovelnoses than the Keokuk Union Depot, I did
some digging through the list archives and found comments (some from Marshall
Thayer) indicating that 9906-9907 got the Mars light in March 1940, 9904-9905
soon after that same year, and that 9900, 9902, 9903 and 9908 didn't recevie
them until after the war. This fits with what Nelson has been able to
document. Notably 9901 did not receive one, as it was destroyed.

Nelson, thank you again for taking the time to look and for the summary work.
If we're looking at late 1940s for addition of the Mars light to 9903 then
the modification of the KUD roof has to be later than that and Ken Martin's
date of 1955 for the roof change could well be right.
Knocking off the question marks one at a time,
  Duncan Cameron

I went through the rest of my books looking at before and after photos for
Mars lights, and here are the results:

Pioneer Zephyr (9900) with single headlight in 1944 (Burlington's Zephyrs,
  p. 41)

Pioneer Zephyr (9900) with single headlight in 1944 (10th anniversary photo,
Way of the Zephyrs, The Postwar Years, p. 15)

Pioneer Zephyr (9900) with twin headlight in 1954 (20th anniversary photo,
  Diesels West, p. 69)

9902 with single headlight in 1940 (The Early Zephyrs, p. 54)

9902 with single headlight in 1942 (Burlington Route Passenger Trains, Vol.
  1, p. 121)

  9902 with twin headlight in 1948 (Burlington's Zephyrs, p. 76)

Mark Twain Zephyr (9903) with twin headlights in 1951 (Way of the Zephyrs,
  The Postwar Years, p. 21)

  Mark Twain Zephyr (9903) with twin headlights in 1952 (BB#23, p. 98)

Mark Twain Zephyr (9903) with twin headlight in 1952 (Burlington's Zephyrs,
  p. 70)

Mark Twain Zephyr (9903) with twin headlight in 1955 (Everywhere West, p.
  44)

9904 with single headlight in 1938 (Burlington in Transition, p. 146)

9904 with twin headlight in 1940 (Burlington Route Passenger Trains, Vol. 1,
  p. 121)

9904 in suburban service with twin headlight in 1948 (Burlington in
  Transition, p. 144)

9905 with twin headlight in 1943 (The Early Zephyrs, p. 87)

9906 with twin headlight in 1940 (The Early Zephyrs, p. 79)

9908 with single headlight in 1940 (Burlington in Transition, p. 145)

Morning Zephyr (Train 22) with twin headlight in 1947 (Burlington's Zephyrs,
  p. 54)

Afternoon Twin Zephyr with twin headlight in 1949 and the second Twin Cities
  Zephyr in 1945 (Everywhere West, p. 51, 66)

Twin Cities Zephyr with twin headlight in 1949 (Burlington in Transition, p.
  54)

Sam Houston Zephyr with single headlight in March 1948 (Everywhere West, p.
  137)

Denver Zephyr with single headlight in 1936 (Everywhere West, p. 46)

Denver Zephyr (Silver Knight) with single headlight in 1939 (Burlington in
  Transition, p. 52)

Denver Zephyr (Silver Knight) with twin headlight in 1940 (Burlington in
  Transition, p. 55)

  Notes:

Mars light added to 9900 in the 1940s.

Mark Twain Zephyr (9903) received a Mars light in the mid-1940 (Doughty Vol.
  1, p. 54)

Mark Twain Zephyr (9903) received a Mars light in the late-1940s (Lotz,
  BB#23, p. 98)

"The first two units to get the enlarge headlight with an integrated
oscillating Mars light were Nos. 9906 and 9907 in March of 1940" (Doughty
  Vol. 1, p. 79)

Several undated photographs of 9903 are printed in BB#23 showing both single
  and twin headlights.

  Summary

The non-articulated shovelnoses got Mars lights before the articulated
  shovelnoses (as early as 1940).

Based upon photographic evidence, Mars lights were installed as follows:

  9900 Between 1944 and 1954
  9902 Between 1942 and 1948
  9903 Between 1940 and 1951
  9904 Between 1938 and 1940
  9905 Before 1943
  9906 1940
  9908 After 1940

For the Mark Twain Zephyr (9903), Doughty says mid-1940s and Lotz says
late-1940s. The most likely modification date based upon data for 9900,
  9902, and 9903 above is between 1944 and 1948.

Knowing the dates for the undated single headlight Mark Train Zephyr photos
in BB#23 could help narrow the modification date.

  Nelson
